Public sector pay talks are set to resume this morning at the Workplace Relations Commission.
The negotiations began yesterday afternoon and concluded after about five hours.
Leaving the talks last night, General Secretary of the Fórsa trade union Kevin Callinan said the first day had been an opportunity for both sides to lay out their opening positions.
“We went through, in some detail, our priorities in relation to pay and the various aspects of it,” Mr Callinan said.
Earlier, Minister for Public Expenditure Jack Chambers said he expected intensive discussions and negotiation would take place over the next number of days.
“Obviously we want to deliver a fair, meaningful and credible pay agreement for public servants, but also ensure that we drive productivity and reform through a pay agreement, and that’s understood by all sides as part of the collective bargaining process,” Mr Chambers said.
A dispute over delays in agreeing a new pay deal led to a 24-hour strike last Wednesday involving more than 300,000 public sector workers.
Unions agreed to suspend another strike planned for tomorrow to allow for talks.
However a work-to-rule is continuing across the public sector.
