The Communications Workers’ Union (CWU), which represents tech workers, is to hold an AI ‘counter summit’ to highlight the impact of artificial intelligence on jobs.

It comes ahead of the International AI Summit which takes place in Dublin on Wednesday as part of Ireland’s EU Presidency.

The CWU said the event will present a “real world” analysis of the impact of AI on workers and highlight opposition to the adoption of new technologies without consultation with staff.

The event is organised by the Digital and Tech Workers Alliance branch of the CWU.

“The idea that AI should be developed and deployed simply for profit, regardless of its impact on workers and communities is dangerous,” said CWU Deputy General Secretary Ian McArdle.

He said: “We need to create space for critical voices.

“We need to reject tech products that oppose our social interests and big tech’s desire to achieve AI profitability at all costs.”

The Government has said it wants the voices of workers to be included at the International AI Summit.

One of the panel discussions at the event will focus on the changing world of work and will include representatives from the Ibec group Technology Ireland and the CWU.
