New figures from the Central Statistics Office show that energy fuel prices jumped by 37% in May compared to the same time last year as the price of wholesale petrol, diesel and heating oil remained high due to the impact of the war in the Middle East.

But all energy fuel prices fell by 7.8% on a monthly basis in May, the CSO said. Fuel oil prices were down 9.7% in May compared to April, while gas oil eased by 6.6%.

Today’s figures also reveal that wholesale electricity prices rose by 10.1% in May compared with April and were 33.1% higher than May 2025.

Wholesale electricity prices have fallen by 62.7% when compared with the peak that occurred in August 2022, the CSO added.

Meanwhile, producer prices for food products increased by 0.7% since April and rose by 1.3% in the year since May 2025. One of the most notable changes over the 12 months to May was the price of fish and fish products which rose by 8.9%, the CSO added.

Today’s figures also show that wholesale price inflation showed an increase in May with a 0.9% growth in the overall Producer Price Index for manufacturing industries in the month.
