Profits at Sharon Horgan’s production company Merman last year increased more than four fold to \u00a3799,747 (\u20ac957,322) in a “successful trading period” for the business.<\/p>\n

New consolidated accounts filed to Companies House in the UK by Ms Horgan’s Merman Television Ltd show that profits increased sharply despite revenues decreasing by 47% or \u00a311m from \u00a323.2m to \u00a312.1m.<\/p>\n

The post tax profit of \u00a3799,747 in 2025 for the multi-award winning independent TV and film production company followed a post tax profit of \u00a3167,428 in 2024.<\/p>\n

Ms Horgan sits on the board with two other directors and in their report they state that they “are pleased to report a successful trading period for the group companies due to the progression made on a number of key productions”.<\/p>\n

They state that “production and overhead costs again remained under close control, while we report, once adjusted for high-end television tax credits and audio visual expenditure credit, our profit for the year is \u00a3800,000”.<\/p>\n

The group’s cash funds increased from \u00a31.6m to \u00a36.3m last year.<\/p>\n

Best known for being the creative force behind TV shows, “Catastrophe” and “Pulling”, Ms Horgan is currently leading another ratings winner with Merman’s “Youth” being broadcast on HBO in the US and HBO Max on this side of the Atlantic.<\/p>\n

The success of “Youth” follows the global success on Netflix this year of another Merman production, “Vladimir”, starring Rachel Weisz, Leo Woodall and John Slattery.<\/p>\n

Other hit productions include “Bad Sisters”, “Divorce”, “Amandaland” and “Shining Vale”.<\/p>\n

The directors state that “the main change in the industry in recent times has been the digitalisation of viewing and the strong impact of VoD (Video on Demand) providers who are driving the future of the industry”.<\/p>\n

They state that “with traditional media concepts seeing a reduced demand, the company has adapted to the streaming service business”.<\/p>\n

Numbers directly employed by the group last year reduced from 14 to 11 as staff costs declined from \u00a31.99m to \u00a31.62m.<\/p>\n

Merman’s staff numbers are employed in their London HQ and a US office in Los Angeles.<\/p>\n

The group last year recorded a gross profit of \u00a32.78m after its cost of sales totalled \u00a39.36m.<\/p>\n

The group recorded an operating profit of \u00a3752,070 in 2025.<\/p>\n

Directors’ pay almost halved from \u00a31m to \u00a3549,730 and the best paid director’s pay reduced from \u00a3360,586 to \u00a3249,309 made up of \u00a3247,988 in remuneration and \u00a31,321 in pension contributions.<\/p>\n

At the end of December last, the group was sitting on accumulated profits of \u00a31.35m.<\/p>\n

On the main risks and uncertainties facing the business, the directors point to the uncertainty regarding the long-term viability of the current commercial broadcasting model, particularly in respect of technological changes and new entrants to the market which are affecting consumer behaviour and contributing to an intensely competitive environment.<\/p>\n

The directors also point to the risk that the company’s significant and high profile series are not re-commissioned by broadcasters.<\/p>\n

They also cite the risk created by the new streaming services tending to acquire all intellectual property rights so that a shift in commissioning to these services may adversely impact the company’s distribution revenue.<\/p>\n

Programme budgets being under pressure due to inflation and increases to crew and production costs is also cited by directors as a risk and uncertainty.<\/p>\n
