Retailer Primark has reached a major milestone in the history of the business as it opened its 500th store in Naples in Italy today.<\/p>\n

From its first store in Dublin in 1969, Primark – which trades as Penneys here – has grown to serve millions of customers across 19 countries in Europe, the US and Middle East.<\/p>\n

Its 500 stores represent around 20 million square feet of retail space and it employs more than 80,000 staff, representing 190 nationalities.<\/p>\n

The company said its store-led operating model remains central to its customer proposition and a key competitive advantage as the business continues to grow internationally.<\/p>\n

The store in La Cartiera shopping centre in Naples represents a \u20ac8m investment.<\/p>\n

The opening of the new store in Naples will be followed this week with three further store openings in Portugal, Romania and the largest shopping centre in the US, the Mall of America.<\/p>\n

Eoin Tonge, chief executive of Primark, said that reaching 500 stores is an incredible milestone, adding that the company was grateful to its loyal customers, suppliers and partners who have grown with it and most of all, its staff for everything they do.<\/p>\n

“We’re very proud of the role our stores play in the communities, towns and economies they\u2019re part of. Getting to 500 demonstrates the enduring strength of our store-led model,” he said.<\/p>\n

“We see significant opportunities ahead to grow our store footprint and bring Primark to even more customers around the world,” the CEO added.<\/p>\n

Primark’s path to 500<\/h3>\n

1969<\/b> – The first ever store opens in Dublin, Ireland, trading as Penneys. This is still the name above the 38 stores in Ireland today.<\/p>\n

1974<\/b> – Primark’s first store in England opens in Derby. Today, there are more than 190 stores across the UK, Primark’s largest market.<\/p>\n

2006<\/b> – The first store opens in Madrid, Spain where Primark now operate more than 65 stores.<\/p>\n

2008 <\/b>– The first store in The Netherlands opens in Rotterdam, with 19 in the market today.<\/p>\n

2009<\/b> – European expansion ramps up as Primark sets down roots in Portugal, Germany and Belgium with stores in Lisbon, Bremen and Liege.<\/p>\n

2012<\/b> – Primark enters the Austrian market, with a store in Innsbruck, the first of five stores in the country.<\/p>\n

2013<\/b> – Primark opens its doors in Marseille, the first in France and now one of 30 stores in the country.<\/p>\n

2015 <\/b>– Primark finally crossed the Atlantic, and opened its doors in the US, in Boston, still the US headquarters today .<\/p>\n

2016<\/b> – Doors open in Arese, the first store in Italy. Today there are 20 plus stores in Italy, including the Milan flagship store and regional office.<\/p>\n

2019<\/b> – The world’s biggest Primark opens in Birmingham in the UK, featuring five floors, and over 160,000 feet of retail space. The business also entered Central Eastern Europe, in Ljubljana in Slovenia.<\/p>\n

2020<\/b> – Poland becomes the 13th market with the opening of a new store in Warsaw.<\/p>\n

2021 <\/b>– The Czech Republic becomes the 14th market with a new store in Prague.<\/p>\n

2022<\/b> – Continuing its expansion, Primark opened its first store in Romania, the 15th market, in the capital of Bucharest.<\/p>\n

2023 <\/b>– A new store in Bratislava in Slovakia, represents the chain’s 16th market.<\/p>\n

2024<\/b> – The business continues its expansion in Central and Eastern Europe entering its 17th market, Hungary, with the opening of a store in Budapest.<\/p>\n

2025<\/b> – Following the announcement of a strategic partnership with leading international retail franchise operator Alshaya Group, Primark opens its doors in the Middle East for the first time in Kuwait.<\/p>\n
