{"id":46775,"date":"2026-08-28T01:22:43","date_gmt":"2026-08-28T05:22:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sharewatch.com\/wp\/2026\/08\/28\/one-in-eight-young-people-not-in-work-or-education\/"},"modified":"2026-08-28T01:22:43","modified_gmt":"2026-08-28T05:22:43","slug":"one-in-eight-young-people-not-in-work-or-education","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sharewatch.com\/wp\/2026\/08\/28\/one-in-eight-young-people-not-in-work-or-education\/","title":{"rendered":"One in eight young people not in work or education"},"content":{"rendered":"<div data-testid=\"rich-text\" data-block=\"text\">\n<p>In May, the first part of Milburn&#8217;s report, which was commissioned by the government, said the reasons for the rise in rates among men were &#8220;complex&#8221;, but could be down to more health issues, the &#8220;erosion of traditional employment routes&#8221; and &#8220;a growing gap in educational outcomes&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>He also said the &#8220;Neet problem is grounded in social disadvantage&#8221; and highlighted higher rates among certain groups, including young people who:<\/p>\n<div>\n<ul role=\"list\">\n<li>\n<p>have grown up in poverty<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>have special educational needs or disabilities (SEND)<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>don&#8217;t have a GCSE-level qualification<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>are Black, African and Caribbean<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<p>The report warned that one in six young people would be out of work in five years without action, adding: &#8220;We are at risk of a lost generation.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>It said young jobseekers were submitting dozens, sometimes hundreds of applications, but rejections had become the norm.<\/p>\n<p>Last week, analysis by the BBC found that competition for degree apprenticeships in England through the government&#8217;s &#8220;find an apprenticeship&#8221; service, for example, had quadrupled over the past three years.<\/p>\n<p>The second, and final, instalment of Milburn&#8217;s report &#8211; including recommendations for how to tackle the problems &#8211; is expected in the coming weeks.<\/p>\n<p><i>Additional reporting by Kate McGough, Erica Witherington, Rahib Khan and Miguel Roca-Terry<\/i><\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In May, the first part of Milburn&#8217;s report, which was commissioned by the government, said the reasons for the rise in rates among men were &#8220;complex&#8221;, but could be down to more health issues, the &#8220;erosion of traditional employment routes&#8221; and &#8220;a growing gap in educational outcomes&#8221;.
