The Minister for Enterprise Peter Burke has said the cost of not proceeding with planned increases to fuel excise duty will be “significant”, but did not offer a specific figure as to how much the Government will spend on the measure.<\/p>\n

The D\u00e1il will be recalled early from its summer recess for one day, next Friday, to agree to a financial resolution confirming how a phased move to reinstate cuts to excise at the beginning of September and October will not go ahead as planned.<\/p>\n

The Minister for Finance Simon Harris will bring a memo to an incorporeal meeting of Cabinet confirming the move ahead of Friday’s special D\u00e1il sitting.<\/p>\n

Mr Harris is expected to update his Cabinet colleagues on the costs and impact of continuing with the current rate of excise cuts for a further two months as well as the various different scenarios that could play out amid the absence of a deal on the Strait of Hormuz.<\/p>\n

The decision to keep the cuts to excise – introduced after the outbreak of conflict in the Middle East and April’s fuel protests – will place additional pressure on the Coalition as it moves to finalise October’s Budget.<\/p>\n

A phased return of excise duty costs had been due to take place in four stages. They were:<\/p>\n

    \n
  • 1 September: 9 cent on a litre of petrol, 10 cent on a litre of diesel<\/li>\n
  • 1 October: 8 cent on a litre of petrol, 8 cent on a litre of diesel<\/li>\n
  • 1 November: 5 cent on a litre of petrol, 7 cent on a litre of diesel<\/li>\n
  • 1 December: 5 cent on a litre of petrol, 5 cent on a litre of diesel<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    However, on Friday the Government announced that the increases for September and October will not now go ahead.<\/p>\n

    Reports have suggested the cost of keeping the cuts to excise could be in the range of \u20ac100m a month but Minister Burke declined to confirm the figure.<\/p>\n

    Speaking on RT\u00c9’s This Week programme, Mr Burke said: “I haven’t seen an exact costing as of yet but it will be significant.<\/p>\n

    “The Government took two decisions earlier this year. We increased our Government ceiling in 2026 by about \u20ac700m and also on Budget day last year, we had [a] contingency fund of a billion euro. So, that has really been absorbed by potentially the reduction in excise,” he added.<\/p>\n

    Some Opposition politicians have previously claimed that the Government should look towards more targeted measures for workers amid the rising cost of living, however Mr Burke insisted continuing with excise cuts would benefit the whole economy.<\/p>\n

    “This will reduce inflation by about 0.6% and that will mean – be it through our shops, our groceries, it is keeping our costs down a little bit, notwithstanding there are very significant challenges,” he said.<\/p>\n

    Mr Burke said the excise cuts “can’t go on indefinitely” and that the Government had to take decisions “based on the reality on the ground” rather than the threat of further fuel protests.<\/p>\n

    He said the Coalition was minded not to push petrol and diesel “well beyond two euro” but refused to be drawn on whether any of the Government’s promises for October’s Budget will not go ahead due to the money directed towards continuing with excuse cuts.<\/p>\n

    Mr Burke added that the Budget will look to make childcare more affordable for families and deal with the cost-of-living crisis but did not offer specifics as he insisted “things are changing every day” with the war in Iran.<\/p>\n

    Separately, the Minister for Public Expenditure Jack Chambers said the Government will continue to provide fuel supports as long as the war in the Middle East continues to push up global oil prices.<\/p>\n

    “I think if the price dynamics of today sustain themselves over the autumn period, I think we’re likely to see further deferrals in the reimposition of excise over that period,” he said in an interview with The Irish Mail on Sunday.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n
