{"id":46237,"date":"2026-08-21T00:22:51","date_gmt":"2026-08-21T04:22:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sharewatch.com\/wp\/2026\/08\/21\/dail-recall-over-fuel-interventions-under-review-burke\/"},"modified":"2026-08-21T00:22:51","modified_gmt":"2026-08-21T04:22:51","slug":"dail-recall-over-fuel-interventions-under-review-burke","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sharewatch.com\/wp\/2026\/08\/21\/dail-recall-over-fuel-interventions-under-review-burke\/","title":{"rendered":"D\u00e1il recall over fuel interventions under review &#8211; Burke"},"content":{"rendered":"<section class=\"medium-10 medium-offset-1 columns article-body\" itemprop=\"articleBody\" data-epic-field=\"content\">\n<p>An early recall of the D\u00e1il is &#8220;under review&#8221; by the Government leaders, a Cabinet minister has said, as measures designed to keep fuel costs down are due to be withdrawn.<\/p>\n<p>An excise cut of 32c on a litre of diesel and 27c for petrol is due to be phased out from September.<\/p>\n<p>The cuts were introduced in April amid major protests that strangled fuel distribution around the country.<\/p>\n<p>Today, Minister for Enterprise Peter Burke did not rule out an early return of the D\u00e1il, which is scheduled to resume on 16 September.<\/p>\n<p>He said the initial timing for the phasing out of the excise cut &#8211; which came as part of \u20ac750m in industry supports and cost-of-living measures &#8211; was devised when the outlook over the Middle East conflict &#8220;looked more positive&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>However, he said the situation had &#8220;deteriorated significantly from then&#8221; and &#8220;nothing can be ruled out at this juncture&#8221; when asked if the phase-out could be pushed back.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Burke said: &#8220;If you look at the price of marked gas oil\/green diesel, it was retailing about net 94 cents a litre &#8211; it\u2019s up at \u20ac1.24 now, and that\u2019s about a 30% of an increase on net effect &#8211; which is pretty significant for the agri-economy, and indeed in the wider economy &#8211; when you look at the work that we\u2019ve brought forward, over a billion euro now in reductions.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;So we\u2019re currently actively reviewing it.&#8221;<\/p>\n<hr\/>\n<p><b>&#8216;A lot has changed over the last number of weeks&#8217; &#8211; Burke<\/b><\/p>\n<p alt=\"Govt keeping option of D\u00e1il recall open amid rising fuel prices - Burke\" data-embed=\"comcast-player\" data-guid=\"epic-mpx-manual-36151\" data-id=\"YgyxHo_w3yHR\" data-thumbnail=\"https:\/\/www.rte.ie\/images\/0024df1f-900.jpg\"><iframe allow=\"encrypted-media *\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" height=\"345\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" seamless=\"seamless\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rte.ie\/embed\/?id=YgyxHo_w3yHR&#038;app=true\" width=\"614\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<hr\/>\n<p>Asked if the high cost of the excise cut could impact on the pool of money available for tax cuts in Budget 2027, Mr Burke said the Government is &#8220;really focused on&#8221; reducing grocery prices and food prices through measures cutting costs on getting &#8220;products on shelves&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We have a lot of work to do, and obviously we\u2019ve over an \u20ac8 billion package in the budget, \u20ac1.5 billion for income tax measures &#8211; about a 6% increase in spending &#8211; and that\u2019s going to be key to keep measures sustainable, and its important that we do focus heavily on income tax as well,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>Pressed on whether the Government was prepared to recall the D\u00e1il to push back the unwinding of the excise cut, he said: &#8220;Government leaders are keeping all those decisions under review, and obviously a lot has changed over the last number of weeks.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>He said: &#8220;It is so uncertain internationally, and we\u2019ve seen things escalate very, very dramatically in the last week, particularly in relation to the Strait of Hormuz, the timeline passing now for a deal, which leaves us in very uncertain, unchartered territory again, and also when you see the price escalating the pumps.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/section>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>An early recall of the D\u00e1il is &#8220;under review&#8221; by the Government leaders, a Cabinet minister has said, as measures designed to keep fuel costs down are due to be withdrawn.
