Almost a quarter of new private cars licensed in the first half of 2026 were electric vehicles, new figures from the Central Statistics Office show today.<\/p>\n

The CSO said the number of new private electric cars licensed in June rose by 26% when compared with June last year, with the figure rising to 1,539 from 1,225.<\/p>\n

This means the share of electric vehicles (EVs) among new private cars from January to June was 24% compared with 17% in the same time in 2025.<\/p>\n

The CSO noted that licensing of hybrid vehicles increased by 24% from 764 in June last year to 944 in June this year.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, the number of new plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) licensed increased by 23% on last year – rising to 752 from 609.<\/p>\n

In the first six months of 2026, the CSO said there was a 49% jump in new private EVs licensed when compared with the same time last year – 19,580 from 13,102.<\/p>\n

Over the same six-month period, there was a fall of 20% in the number of new petrol cars licensed, with the number of vehicles slowing to 17,171 from 21,424. There was also a 22% decrease in the number of new diesel cars licensed, with the figure falling to 10,418 from 13,439.<\/p>\n

Today’s CSO figures show the total number of new private cars licensed in June declined by 3% when compared with June 2025, falling to 5,123 from 5,259 vehicles.<\/p>\n

But the number of used (imported) cars licensed grew by 42% to 7,714 in June from 5,448 the same month last year.<\/p>\n

The share of electric vehicles among used cars in the first six months of the year was 11% compared with 4% in the first half of 2025, the CSO said.<\/p>\n

Today’s CSO figures show that Volkswagen was the most popular make of new private car licensed in June at 859 vehicles, followed by Tesla (637), Skoda (613), Toyota (489), and BMW (242).<\/p>\n

Together, these five makes represented 55% of all new private cars licensed in the month, the CSO noted.<\/p>\n

The most popular brand of new electric car licensed in June 2026 was the Tesla Model 3 (429), followed by the Tesla Model Y (208), and the Volkswagen ID.4 (113).<\/p>\n<\/section>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
