{"id":38508,"date":"2026-04-21T23:23:01","date_gmt":"2026-04-22T03:23:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sharewatch.com\/wp\/2026\/04\/21\/royal-mail-to-ask-part-time-posties-to-work-more-to-meet-letter-targets\/"},"modified":"2026-04-21T23:23:01","modified_gmt":"2026-04-22T03:23:01","slug":"royal-mail-to-ask-part-time-posties-to-work-more-to-meet-letter-targets","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sharewatch.com\/wp\/2026\/04\/21\/royal-mail-to-ask-part-time-posties-to-work-more-to-meet-letter-targets\/","title":{"rendered":"Royal Mail to ask part-time posties to work more to meet letter targets"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"bbc-main\">\n<div data-testid=\"byline\" data-component=\"byline-block\">\n<p><time datetime=\"2026-04-21T11:31:45.352Z\">16 hours ago<\/time><\/p>\n<p><span data-testid=\"byline-contributors\"><\/p>\n<div data-testid=\"byline-contributors-contributor-0\">\n<p><span>Emer Moreau<\/span><span data-testid=\"byline-contributors-contributor-0-role-location\">Business reporter<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-component=\"image-block\">\n<figure>\n<div>\n<p><span>iStock\/Getty Images<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><figcaption>Royal Mail will allow part-time posties to pick up more hours to improve delivery performance<\/figcaption><\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\">\n<p>Part-time Royal Mail postal workers will be offered the option to work longer hours in an effort to improve its service after criticism from the government and the regulator.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\">\n<p>Royal Mail says it will invest \u00a3500m over the next five years on a series of measures including giving posties more familiar routes as it attempts to deliver more letters on time.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\">\n<p>Ofcom, the official watchdog, agreed to relax Royal Mail&#8217;s letter delivery targets this month, but Royal Mail has failed to meet those lower target levels, according to its latest figures.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\">\n<p>Royal Mail is currently delivering three quarters of first class letters on time against a target of 93%.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\">\n<p>The firm told BBC Breakfast it would take five to six months to implement its plans and that delivery targets would be met in a year&#8217;s time.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\">\n<p>Its improvement measures also include investment to manage sickness absences and targeted support for the worst-performing delivery offices.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\">\n<p>Additionally, low-priority second class and other non-first class posts will be delivered every other weekday instead of daily. Parcels will still be delivered Monday to Saturday.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\">\n<p>The company has repeatedly said that its Universal Service Obligation (USO) \u2013 its legal requirement to deliver letters six days a week to every address in the UK \u2013 is outdated and needs reform.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\">\n<p>Its plans have been approved by the Communication Workers&#8217; Union (CWU) subject to a members&#8217; vote. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\">\n<p>Postal workers across the UK have previously told BBC Your Voice that they are being asked to move or hide mail from senior bosses so it looks like delivery targets are being met.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\">\n<p>Dave Ward, the general secretary of the Communication Workers&#8217; Union (CWU), said on Tuesday that Royal Mail staff &#8220;welcome any plan that reverses the chaos that posties have seen&#8221;.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\">\n<p>But he told BBC Breakfast that the company does not have &#8220;a great track record in sticking to their promises&#8221;.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\">\n<p>&#8220;The issue really is: will the company actually allow posties to have the tools for the job?<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\">\n<p>&#8220;Can we fully resource offices? Can we keep staff? We&#8217;ve not been able to do that in recent times. And also, will they allow the postie to actually use their expertise and their knowledge to design the routes?&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\">\n<p>Royal Mail&#8217;s UK Operations Director, Ricky McAulay, said the plans were a &#8220;fundamental reset&#8221;.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\">\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s what many other European postal administrations have already done,&#8221; he told BBC Breakfast.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\">\n<p>He said the universal service obligation to deliver letters six days a week was &#8220;outdated&#8221;. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\">\n<p>But he insisted that Royal Mail does not &#8220;systematically prioritise parcels over letters&#8221;.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>16 hours ago Emer MoreauBusiness reporter iStock\/Getty Images Royal Mail will allow part-time posties to pick up more hours to improve delivery performance Part-time Royal Mail postal workers will be offered the option to work longer hours in an effort to improve its service after criticism from the government and the regulator.
