{"id":38238,"date":"2026-04-17T23:23:10","date_gmt":"2026-04-18T03:23:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sharewatch.com\/wp\/2026\/04\/17\/tinder-and-zoom-offer-proof-of-humanity-eye-scans-to-combat-ai\/"},"modified":"2026-04-17T23:23:10","modified_gmt":"2026-04-18T03:23:10","slug":"tinder-and-zoom-offer-proof-of-humanity-eye-scans-to-combat-ai","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sharewatch.com\/wp\/2026\/04\/17\/tinder-and-zoom-offer-proof-of-humanity-eye-scans-to-combat-ai\/","title":{"rendered":"Tinder and Zoom offer &#8216;proof of humanity&#8217; eye-scans to combat AI"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"bbc-main\">\n<div data-testid=\"byline\" data-component=\"byline-block\">\n<p><time datetime=\"2026-04-17T19:05:43.804Z\">8 hours ago<\/time><\/p>\n<p><span data-testid=\"byline-contributors\"><\/p>\n<div data-testid=\"byline-contributors-contributor-0\">\n<p><span>Kali Hays<\/span><span data-testid=\"byline-contributors-contributor-0-role-location\">Technology reporter<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-component=\"image-block\">\n<figure>\n<div>\n<p><span>Reuters<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\">\n<p>Tinder will let users prove they are human and not robots by bringing advanced eye-scanning technology to the app amid rising fears over AI.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\">\n<p>Users of the dating app, as well as other major platforms such as video calling service Zoom, will be able to scan their irises to earn a &#8220;proof of humanity&#8221; badge attached to their profile or name.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\">\n<p>Through either an online app or an orb-shaped scanning device run by the World network people can submit to a scan of their iris, the coloured portion of the eye, in order to confirm they are human.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\">\n<p>World, formerly known as Worldcoin, is part of Tools for Humanity, a start-up co-founded and chaired by Sam Altman who is also the head of ChatGPT-maker OpenAI.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\">\n<p>Once a person is confirmed as human by the technology they receive a unique identification code which is stored on their smartphone and considered their World ID.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\">\n<p>A new World ID app, as well as the partnerships with Tinder and Zoom, were revealed during a live event in San Francisco on Friday.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\">\n<p>It began with a video projected on several large screens in a small auditorium depicting several famous journalists, including Walter Cronkite, Dan Rather, and Larry King, as well as former President Ronald Regan.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\">\n<p>All of the men were shown using historic video footage that had been altered using AI to have them appear to be realistically discussing the need for a way to identify who is human on the internet.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\">\n<p>Altman took the stage briefly after the deepfake montage to applause from an audience of a few hundred people.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\">\n<p>He said there will soon be &#8220;more stuff made by AI than is made by humans&#8221; online. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\">\n<p>&#8220;I&#8217;m not afraid for the future as long as we can tell between the two,&#8221; Altman added.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\">\n<p>Tinder and Zoom have encountered more problems with fake or malicious accounts and users over the last two years as improving AI technology has made it easier to impersonate human speech, voice and likeness.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\">\n<p>Fake profiles on Tinder, often referred to as &#8220;bots&#8221;, are typically used to scam people out of money or their personal information.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\">\n<p>One user, Victoria Brooks, wrote last year on a personal blog she found Tinder overrun with bots looking to scam people.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\">\n<p>Brooks estimated 30% of Tinder profiles she&#8217;d encountered were &#8220;AI-enhanced, emotionally manipulative, algorithmically-optimized romance scammers&#8221;. Such bot accounts use not only fake profile photos, but AI-generated scripts to chat with real users.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-component=\"image-block\">\n<figure>\n<div>\n<p><span>Reuters<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><figcaption>Tinder&#8217;s owners Match Group are trying to eliminate fake profiles<\/figcaption><\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\">\n<p>Romance scams saw people in the US lose more than $1bn last year, according to the Federal Trade Commission.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\">\n<p>Late last year, Tinder began requiring all users to submit a video selfie in order to confirm they were real people. The integration with World ID will be an additional way people can be verified on the app if they choose to do so.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\">\n<p>Yoel Roth, who leads trust and safety at Match Group, the owner of Tinder, said &#8220;Partnering with World ID is a natural next step&#8221; for the platform to help users &#8220;know the person on the other end is real.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\">\n<p>Zoom, which is widely used for video conferences in work settings, is more concerned with increasingly sophisticated deepfakes of people who may be known to a user.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\">\n<p>In 2024, a worker in Hong Kong was convinced by video deepfakes of his company&#8217;s chief financial officer and several other co-workers to hand over $25m.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\">\n<p>Research from Deloitte said financial fraud conducted through such deepfake scams could reach $40bn by 2027 in the US alone.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\">\n<p>Someone with a World ID now has the option to use it on Zoom in order to show they are who they appear to be.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-component=\"subheadline-block\">\n<p><h2>Changing name, not irises<\/h2>\n<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\">\n<p>World is the third time the name of the company behind the authentication technology has changed.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\">\n<p>When it first launched to the public in 2022 it was called Worldcoin, and launched a cryptocurrency under the same name.
