Funding from central government to local authorities increased by 28% last year to \u20ac8.6 billion.<\/p>\n

The latest report from the State’s spending watchdog the Comptroller & Auditor General reveals that total funding has more than doubled since 2019.<\/p>\n

The main sources of funding come from The Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage, the Local Government Fund, and the Department of Transport.<\/p>\n

The delivery of social and affordable housing, along with other housing supports were the main reasons for which funding was provided in 2024.<\/p>\n

Other main purposes included transport investment, business supports, and support for environmental initiatives.<\/p>\n

Today’s report shows that funding for housing and regeneration increased by around \u20ac1.3 billion or 34% last year to \u20ac4.9 billion.<\/p>\n

Total funding for transport investment dropped slightly to \u20ac1.6 billion, from \u20ac1.61 billion in 2023.<\/p>\n

When it comes to funding for the country’s roads, \u20ac445 million was allocated to local authorities for the improvement of national roads, down from \u20ac526 million the previous year.<\/p>\n

However, funding for the improvement of regional and local roads increased from \u20ac685 million to \u20ac733 million.<\/p>\n

Local authority funding for public transport and active travel also increased – up \u20ac23 million in 2024 to \u20ac423 million.<\/p>\n

Total funding for environmental initiatives increased, as did funding for employment and business schemes which jumped from \u20ac108 million in 2023 to \u20ac534 last year.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
