Swedish communications technology company Ericsson is to invest €200 million over the next three years in a new Research, Development, and Innovation project at its Athlone facility.

The company said the investment aims to deliver next-generation open network management and automation capabilities with artificial intelligence, machine learning and advanced analytics.

Ericsson currently employs more than 1,300 people in Ireland, and the Athlone facility serves as its designated centre of excellence for intelligent network management.

The company said this latest investment underlines Ericsson’s commitment to Ireland as a strategic hub for research and development.

“Ericsson has a long history and deep roots in Ireland spanning more than 50 years,” said the Head of Ericsson’s Athlone site and Network Management Engineering Unit, Denis Dullea.

“By delivering on this cutting-edge project, we’re both investing in Ireland’s future and empowering mobile operators worldwide,” Mr Dullea said.

The project is supported by the Government through IDA Ireland.

“Ericsson’s €200 million announcement at their Athlone facility is fantastic news,” said Minister for Enterprise Peter Burke.

“Their innovative R&D project, which will span a duration of three years, will improve efficiency in 5G networks globally,” he added.

CEO of IDA Ireland Michael Lohan said the investment strengthens the long-term legacy of Ericsson in Ireland.

“This RD&I project embodies cutting-edge innovation and exemplifies IDA’s continued commitment to balanced regional development,” Mr Lohan said.
