Errors with two static speed cameras at separate locations last year, led to the loss of over €440,000 in traffic fines.

Details in relation to the cancellation of 2,785 fixed charge penalty notices are contained in today’s report from Comptroller and Auditor General. They arose as a result of problems with static cameras on the N17 in Co. Mayo and the N25 in Co. Kilkenny.

In the first case, a total of 1,871 FCPNs were revoked, after a camera near Claremorris did not have a valid certificate of calibration. Fines totalling €299,360 were rescinded for offences that had been recorded over a two month period from December 2024 to February 2025.

The error on the N25 centred on an incorrect townland being recorded on the system to process fines, in relation to a static camera at Glenmore, Co. Kilkenny. 914 speeding tickets had been issued before the mistake was rectified, with €146,240 in fine revenue lost.

In both cases, no penalty points were applied to any motorists found to have been driving in excess of the speed limit.

The C&AG says that at the time of both errors, a contract with the GoSafe provider did not contain a provision for the recovery of the losses. This was amended in a new contract, effective from 1 November last.

The report recommends that formal procedures should be devised to set out the processes to be followed when a new location is set up on the FCPN system. It says a draft of such a document is being finalised by An Garda Síochána at present.
