New figures from the Central Statistics Office show that the seasonally adjusted Live Register total for August stood at 173,600, down by 600 people from July.
The CSO said the unadjusted Live Register total stood at 182,517 people in August, of which 53.8% were men.
Today’s figures show that the 25 to 34 years age group made up the largest number of those on the Live Register in August at 45,232 people – or 24.8% of the total.
They also reveal the counties with the biggest percentage increases in the number of people on the Live Register in the 12 months to August were Waterford, with the number of people on the Live Register there up by 5.8%, while Dublin saw a hike of 5.1%.
The largest decreases were in Clare, with a drop of 4.7%, while the figures in Monaghan were down 4%.
The CSO noted that a total of 127,708 people were on the Live Register for less than one year, which was 70% of the total number of people on the Live Register.
The Live Register is not designed to measure unemployment as it includes part-time workers as well as seasonal and casual workers who are entitled to Jobseeker’s Benefit or Jobseeker’s Allowance.
Figures earlier this week from the CSO showed that the country’s unemployment figure moved up to 5.1% in July from 5% in June.
The jobless rate had hovered at, or just below, 5% for most of the past 12 months.
