New figures from the Central Statistics Office show that the seasonally adjusted Live Register total for June rose by 400 people to 172,600.
The CSO said the unadjusted Live Register total stood at 176,935 people for June, of which 54.3% were men.
This marked an increase of 4,272 people, or 2.5%, compared with the same month last year.
The 25-34 years age group made up the largest number of those on the Live Register in June at 24.2% of the total, the CSO noted.
The counties that recorded the largest percentage increases in the number of people on the Live Register in June were Waterford, with numbers there up 6.8%, while Longford recorded a 6.7% rise. The largest decreases were seen in Monaghan with a 4.8% fall and a 3.9% fall in Clare.
The Live Register is not designed to measure unemployment as it includes part-time workers as well as seasonal and casual workers who are entitled to Jobseeker’s Benefit or Jobseeker’s Allowance.
Figures earlier this week from the CSO showed that the country’s unemployment figure hit a three-month high of 5% in June, up from 4.9% in May and 4.6% in June last year.
The jobless rate has hovered at, or just below, 5% for most of the past 12 months.
