A stamp has been issued by An Post to mark Ireland’s Presidency of the European Union.

The ‘E’ rate stamp, covering postage to the UK and Europe, is designed by Boyle Design, a Dublin-based studio.

The stamp reflects the official logo of the presidency, featuring the spiral structure of the nebula, first identified in 1845 using the Great Telescope at Birr Castle in Co Offaly.

“The design is also inspired by Irish sculptural work, reflecting a connection with ancient Irish symbols, reinterpreted through a modern lens,” An Post said in a statement.

“Each individual arm of the spiral features 27 discs which symbolise the 27 EU Member States.

“The resulting space at the centre forms a five-point star, a symbol from the EU flag.

“Blue, green and orange symbolise both the Irish State and the European Union”.

A Government statement said: “The whirling stars and 27 points, and the colour scheme, evoke both the EU and Ireland, and connect Europe to its shared past and its bright future”.

The stamp will go on sale on Thursday.

Ireland will hold the rotating six-month Presidency of the Council of the European Union – for the eighth time – from tomorrow until 31 December.
