ESB Networks said it has installed the first of two new 18.75 MVA transformers at Limerick’s Dock Road 38 kV Station.

The first transformer is due to be energised in the third quarter of this year and the second transformer in the first quarter of next year.

It said the final upgrade will deliver a total of 27.5 MVA of additional capacity, supporting growing demand across Limerick city while enabling residential, commercial, and industrial development.

This upgrade will provide enough network capacity to support about 7,000 homes, including facilitating the electrification of heating and transport.

These works form part of ESB Networks’ wider programme of investments, which aim to strengthen and build out the electricity network across the country to ensure it can meet increasing demand while supporting Ireland’s housing and climate ambitions.

Alan Rossiter, Strategy and Network Development, Senior Manager, ESB Networks said the company’s investment at the Dock Road 38 kV Station is a key step in supporting Limerick’s continued growth, helping to provide the capacity needed for new homes, businesses, and future development across this growing region.

“Through targeted strategic interventions ESB Networks is working to ensure the electricity network can keep pace with Limerick’s housing needs while also supporting Ireland’s transition to a low-carbon future,” he said.

“By making better use of the network that is already in place, we are strengthening the network in the near-term and preparing it to support increased use of technologies such as heat pumps and electric vehicles, all the while keeping Limerick’s long-term economic growth in sight,” he added.
