A group representing 22 civil society organisations has called on technology companies to monitor, remove and prevent the spread of hate speech and incitement on their platforms.
The Coalition Against Hate Crime has also called on the Government to uphold responsibilities in line with Ireland’s obligations under EU and international human rights law and standards.
Representing communities commonly targeted by hate crime and hate speech in Ireland, the group has condemned the recent surge in hate attacks targeting members of the Indian community, as well as other migrant and minority ethnic groups in Ireland.
“While we acknowledge the expressions of concern and calls for calm from Government representatives, including Tánaiste Simon Harris, words alone are not enough,” it said.
It has called for swift and decisive condemnation and action to address the rising atmosphere of hostility, hate and violence.
The group also said there was a critical need for community-based initiatives for young people that counter online harm.
It has called on the Government to fully implement the Criminal Justice (Hate Offences) Act 2024 and for the “outdated” incitement to hatred legislation to be modernised in line with the Programme for Government.
