Meanwhile, restaurant and hotel prices jumped 2.7% when compared to last July.
The CSO said this was mainly due to higher prices for alcoholic drinks and food.
On a more positive note, prices across the transport sector dropped – mainly due to lower prices for airfares, petrol and diesel.
However, this reduction was partially offset by higher prices for the maintenance and repair of personal transport equipment.
The price of clothing and footwear also fell in July when compared to the previous year.
