Housing developer D/RES has started work on a new €3.2 million project at their Altidore Gardens development in Newtownmountkennedy, Co Wicklow.

The development will stand as Ireland’s first public buildings built to Net Zero Carbon.

It will also have a creche, which is currently under construction and community centre.

When completed, the community centre will be handed over to Wicklow County Council.

Both facilities will be constructed primarily from responsibly-sourced, mass engineered timber – which D/RES said improves construction efficiency and significantly reduces the embodied carbon associated with traditional construction.

“This project is about delivering sustainable, environmentally friendly, and future-proof infrastructure for Ireland,” said Patrick Durkan, D/RES CEO.

“This milestone isn’t just a first for D/RES; it’s a national first for privately developed public buildings, setting a new benchmark for low-carbon, high-performance construction.

“It clearly demonstrates that Net-Zero Carbon principles are achievable and should be the standard for Ireland’s future,” he added.
