An off-grid micro-distillery has opened on Lambay Island, three miles off the coast of Dublin.

The distillery is believed to be one of the first of its kind in the world and it is aiming to be as sustainable as possible to preserve Lambay’s unique ecosystem.

Production of whiskey on the island will take place for six months of the year, when water is most plentiful and to minimise its impact on the island’s resources.

Lambay is powered by its own micro-grid, which relies heavily on renewable energy.

The distillery, which was fitted into an old potting shed, is currently powered by hydro-treated vegetable oil, with plans to move to fully renewable sources in the future.

The island, which is home to colonies of seabirds and wild wallabies, has been owned by the Baring family since 1904 and the foundation of the whiskey company is part of the family’s efforts to secure the island’s future as a nature reserve.
