New figures from the Central Statistics Office show that the seasonally adjusted Live Register total for January was 171,300 people, a decrease of 1,200 people from the previous month.

The CSO said the unadjusted Live Register total stood at 170,674 people for January, of which 56.7% were men.

It noted that the 25-34 years age group made up the largest number of those on the Live Register in January at 24.1% of the total.

Today’s figures also show the counties with the largest percentage decreases in numbers on the Live Register in January were Donegal, with numbers there down 4%, while numbers on the Live Register in Monaghan fell by 3.7%.

The counties with the largest percentage increases were Dublin, with an increase of 10.1%, while Wicklow saw a rise of 6.9%.

The Live Register is not designed to measure unemployment as it includes part-time workers as well as seasonal and casual workers who are entitled to Jobseeker’s Benefit or Jobseeker’s Allowance.

Figures last week from the CSO showed that the unemployment rate was unchanged at 4.7% in January after data for the preceding months were revised down.

The CSO said the jobless rate for December was revised to 4.7% from 5% previously, with similar revisions applied to data for October and November.
