Further batches of Danone’s Aptamil and Cow & Gate infant formula and follow-on formula have been recalled due to the possible presence of cereulide.

Danone said low levels of cereulide were found in some batches but it said they have now been replaced.

Cereulide is a toxin produced by some strains of the bacterium Bacillus cereus, which can cause food poisoning.

Symptoms can appear within five hours, and the duration of illness is usually six to 24 hours.

The Food Safety Authority of Ireland has said that no cases of human illness linked to the recalled products have been confirmed to date in Ireland.

It is advising parents, guardians and caregivers who may have the recalled products not to feed them to their baby or young child.

Danone has said that the products available for purchase are safe to use.

In a statement, Danone said that specific batches were recalled in line with the latest guidance relating to cereulide from the FSAI.

“Low levels of cereulide were identified in some specific batches and we have replaced them with new products. All products available for purchase are safe to use,” the company said.

The company is also withdrawing batches of infant formula, follow-on formula and base powder made in Ireland for export to a number of EU countries, the UK and third countries.

It said that formula included in this wider recall are exported, some products exported to the UK subsequently may have indirectly been distributed to Ireland from the UK via websites.

The HSE has said that its National Health Protection Office is not aware of any illness linked to the products that have been recalled.

It said that the NHPO is monitoring the gastroenteric surveillance systems and is working closely with FSAI and as well as other stakeholders.

Danone has said that anyone with concerns can contact their Aptamil careline team on 1800 22 1234 or its Cow & Gate careline on 1800 570 570.
