A new DART station has started operating this morning, becoming the first new station in 15 years.

Woodbrook Station is located between Shankill in south Dublin and Bray in Co Wicklow and is the 147th train station on the Irish Rail network.

In a social media post this morning, Iarnród Éireann shared a picture of the first train at the station this morning with the caption: “First DART stops at our newest station, Woodbrook, NOW OPEN! Up to 191 daily services, 40 minutes to city centre, at the heart of new developments which will deliver c. 2,300 new homes.

Minister for Transport Darragh O’Brien was among the first passengers to arrive.

Mr O’Brien said it was a ”significant day” for thee area and an example of what the Government wants to do across the rail network nationwide.

”It was budgeted at €24 million and it came in under budget with the [construction] work only started in October 2023,” Minister O’Brien told reporters.

”It does speak to our ambition over the next five years to double capacity on the DART network, deliver metrolink, proceed with the work into Cork commuter rail, the work in Galway and right across the country,” Mr O’Brien said.

Last year, a record 330 million journeys were made across all modes of public transport.

”It’s about getting people out of the car and giving them options that are clean and affordable,” the minister added.

Iarnród Éireann’s Head of Communications Barry Kenny said last week that the station’s opening was a “positive delivery of public transport planning”.

Speaking on RTÉ’s Morning Ireland, he said several new housing developments are being built in the area, which will be “directly served by this DART station”.

“This is an example of delivering public transport. It is there as the communities develop and grow,” he said.

Mr Kenny acknowledged that more capacity is needed on the DART infrastructure overall and said they are investing in doubling capacity in the Greater Dublin Area.
