The Land Development Agency has purchased a significant industrial site in southwest Dublin, which it says has the potential to deliver over 700 new homes.

The 9.76-acre urban regeneration site is located off the Belgard Road in Cookstown in Tallaght.

The LDA said the site has the potential to deliver over 700 new homes, subject to planning permission, as well as amenities, facilities and a small park.

It was acquired from a private seller as part of the LDA’s private site acquisition initiative, which targets the purchase of privately-owned sites with significant housing potential.

The agency said such investments add to its landbank of State-owned land and local authority partnership sites.

The Cookstown site, which is occupied by industrial buildings, is currently zoned for regeneration.

The design and planning work is to begin immediately and, subject to planning permission, the LDA said it is aiming to have construction started by 2028.

The Chief Executive of the Land Development Agency, John Coleman, said: “Our private land acquisition initiative allows us to identify and acquire high potential sites with an emphasis on regeneration and unlocking underutilised land for the provision of affordable housing.”

He said Tallaght is a fast-developing and well-located area of Dublin with “a pressing housing need.”

“We will now seek to consult widely with the local community in Cookstown and work closely with South Dublin County Council to progress this site to construction,” he added.

The Chief Executive of South Dublin County Council, Colm Ward, said: “This positive development continues progress on the regeneration of Cookstown as well as having the potential to deliver significant numbers of new affordable and social homes.”
