New figures from the Central Statistics Office show the seasonally adjusted Live Register total for April stood at 170,500 people, an increase of 4.5% from March.

The CSO said the unadjusted Live Register total stood at 167,960 people for April, of which 54.4% were male.

Today’s figures show the counties that recorded the largest percentage increases in the number of people on the Live Register in the 12 months to April were Kildare, which reported an increase of 5.1%, while Live Register figures in and Dublin rose by 3.3%.

The largest decreases in April were in Kerry, with Live Register figures there down by 15.3%, while the Clare figures dropped by 12.6%.

The CSO’s Live Register is not designed to measure unemployment as it includes part-time workers as well as seasonal and casual workers who are entitled to Jobseeker’s Benefit or Jobseeker’s Allowance.

Figures earlier this week from the CSO showed that the unemployment rate fell to 4.1%
