Insulation and building materials manufacturer Kingspan has been granted permission to begin work on its €280m building materials manufacturing campus near the city of Lviv in Ukraine.

Kingspan first announced it was investing in building a new facility in Ukraine in June 2022, and the news marked the first major investment announced by a Western business since the Russian invasion of the country began.

The company said a significant portion of the campus is expected to be built within five years and once complete the campus will support over 700 jobs.

The new campus will be a low carbon facility, powered by low carbon solutions including renewable energy, and will manufacture advanced insulation, as well as other building material products and district heating solutions.

Kingspan acquired the site from Sparrow Capital, supported by CBRE.

It has been working closely with project partners including international architecture, engineering and consulting firms such as Delta Group, Gleeds, AVR development and law firm Baker McKenzie as well as local authorities and Ukraine’s Ministry of Economy together with Ukraine Invest.

Kingspan said the building technology deployed at the site, combined with the materials produced at the campus, will play an important role in Ukraine’s reconstruction effort and help meet the rapidly growing demand for energy efficient buildings and facilities in Central and Eastern Europe.

Kingspan’s Ukraine Project Director Mike Stenson said the company were among the first Western businesses to announce plans to invest in Ukraine since the full scale invasion, and it has been fully committed ever since.

“Working closely with officials local to the site and Ukraine’s Ministry of Economy and Ukraine Invest we’re very excited for our vision at this stage to become a reality,” he added.

Co Cavan-based Kingspan operates in more than 80 countries, with over 273 manufacturing facilities around the world. It employs over 27,000 people globally.
